I’m a big fan of dramatic natural backdrops for gorgeous maternity photography. The colors, angles and skyline paint a canvas you could never stage. My home state of Texas is full of breathtaking options. Including the country’s second largest canyon – Palo Duro.
Just 20 minutes outside of Amarillo, Palo Duro has been on my radar for a couple of years now. Most people have never heard of this enormous national treasure. This fact had me amazed.
The canyon has a fascinating history. The Native Americans used the canyon as an escape from rangers, for cattle and for their winter home. The canyon cuts down into the landscape and disappears from sight until you are right up to the edge. You literally have no idea the canyon is there until it opens before you, which is the main reason the rangers couldn’t find the Native Americans.
Seeing it jump out at you takes your breath away. You can drive for hours staring at the red rock landscape. For adventurous couples, what an epic location!
Accessing the best landmarks for your shoot is fairly easily, which means we can capture incredible images with little strain on our prego mommy. Because it’s so close to Amarillo, restaurants, hotels and even hospitals are nearby. Anyone who loves hiking and the outdoors will fall in love with the “Spanish Skirt” rocks and desert flowers in bloom. Most times throughout the year, the canyon is not crowded and makes photo shoots a breeze!
